  1. 1921- . President and later self-proclaimed
  2. emperor of the Central African Republic
  3. 1966-79. Commander in chief from 1963, in Dec
  4. 1965 he led a military coup which gave him
  5. the presidency, and on 4 Dec 1977 he
  6. proclaimed the Central African Empire with
  7. himself as emperor for life. His regime was
  8. characterized by arbitrary state violence and
  9. cruelty. In exile 1979-86, he was tried and
  10. imprisoned. Bokassa, born at Bobangui, joined
  11. the French army 1939 and was awarded the
  12. Croix de Guerre for his service with the
  13. French colonial forces in Indochina. When the
  14. Central African Republic achieved
  15. independence 1960, he was invited to
  16. establish an army. After seizing power, he
  17. annulled the constitution and made himself
  18. president for life 1972, and marshal of the
  19. republic 1974. In 1976 he called in the
  20. former president Dacko, whom he had
  21. overthrown, as his adviser. Backed by France,
  22. Dacko deposed him in a coup while Bokassa was
  23. visiting Libya. In exile until 1986, he then
  24. returned to the Central African Republic to
  25. face the charges against him and received a
  26. death sentence, commuted to life imprisonment
  27. 1988.
